A hydrographic section from South Africa to the southern limit of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current at the Greenwich meridian ArchiMer
Gladyshev, S; Arhan, Michel; Sokov, A; Speich, Sabrina.
The properties and circulation of water masses leaving and entering the Atlantic Ocean south of Africa are examined using data from a hydrographic and Lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler section from South Africa to the southern limit of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). At the upper levels, the ACC fronts are well determined using either classical water mass definitions or gradient-based criteria. While the locations of the Subantarctic Front (SAF), Polar Front (PF), and Southern ACC Front (SACCF) seem controlled by the neighbouring ridges, that of the Subtropical Front (STF) is much influenced in this region (similar to 10 degrees E) by northwestward propagating Agulhas rings. No large amount of Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) is observed,...

A New Mechanism for Mode Water Formation involving Cabbeling and Frontogenetic Strain at Thermohaline Fronts ArchiMer
Thomas, Leif N.; Shakespeare, Callum J..
A simple analytical model is used to elucidate a potential mechanism for steady-state mode water formation at a thermohaline front that involves frontogenesis, submesoscale lateral mixing, and cabbeling. This mechanism is motivated in part by recent observations of an extremely sharp, density-compensated front at the North Wall of the Gulf Stream. Here, the intergyre, along-isopycnal, salinity-temperature difference is compressed into a span of a few kilometers, making the flow susceptible to cabbeling. The sharpness of the front is caused by frontogenetic strain, which is presumably balanced by submesoscale lateral mixing processes. The balance is studied with the simple model, and a scaling is derived for the amount of water mass transformation resulting...

I. Los sistemas nutritivos OceanDocs
Negri, R.M.; Carreto, J.I.; Benavides, H.R..
During the spring (H-04/82: october 11-27, 1982)carried out by the Fishery Research Vessel "Dr.E.Holmberg", the distribution of temperature, salinity, nutrients concentration and photosynthetic pigments were studied at the "Rio de la Plata" maritime front. The presence of Sub-Tropical coastal waters in only station did not allow its characterization. Low Chlorophyll a concentration were noted, in association with scarce concentrations of nutrients and high Margalef index values.

Petit, Tillys.
The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature of the North-Atlantic Ocean that extends from Iceland to the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone. Located between the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea, the Reykjanes Ridge strongly influences the subpolar gyre circulation and is a gate toward the deep convection areas. However, the circulation and distribution across the Reykjanes Ridge has never been directly quantified such that the characterization of the connection between the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea is still incomplete. As part of the Reykjanes Ridge Experiment project, we were able to analyze the circulation around, above and across the Reykjanes Ridge. Mainly based on hydrographic sections along and perpendicular to the ridge axis, the aim of...

Rodríguez Rubio, E.; Giraldo, A..

Carrillo, P..
El objective of this article was to show the impact of a cold phenomenon such as "La Niña" during a multi-year period. The study was conducted by measuring the chemical characteristics of masses of water and comparing them to the characteristics shown in 2000 where the activity of this phenomenon was the strongest. The masses of water were located based on their characterization with parameters such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and inorganic micronutrients (phosphates, silicates, nitrites, and nitrates). These parameters were measured in 1994, a year considered as normal activity and in those years where "La Niña" was observed with greater intensity. The masses of water ATS, AES, ACP, AESS were established during the years of analysis. The...

Development and Application of the GIS-Based Water Mass Analysis Integrated System. OceanDocs
Zhang, Yuexia; MIao, Zhenqing; Yan, Shiqiang.
The research on water masses is always one important facet of Oceanography. I adopt the method of Fuzzy Density Clustering to analyse water masses. Meanwhile, I use Visual Basic 6.0 as developing platform and utilize the MapX components to develop the platform of GIS. By integrating the Water Masses Model compiled by FORTRAN language, and GIS using Tight Coupling, I develop an Integrated System. That makes all phases are finished in one condition, including the gain of computing grid, the pick-up and analysis of data, the choice of parameters and resetting, the computing of model, and the result’s visualization. It improves the efficiency of the data analysis and decision-making. Finally, this system is applied in the Zhoushan fishing ground and adjacent...

Sitz, L.E..
This dissertation analyses the barotropic and baroclinic response of the Argentinean Continental Shelf to different forcing using a three-dimensional numerical ocean model. The study aims towards a systematical exploration of the physical processes that control the circulation. To facilitate the dynamical understanding of the results our experimental strategy was to start with a three dimensional barotropic model (constant density) that examines the influence of winds and tides, and to progress to a more complex case including density stratification (baroclinic model). It was found that the average annual circulation, forced only by the wind, shows a strong contrast between the northern and southern region of the study area. A detailed analysis...

First direct estimates of volume and water mass transports across the Reykjanes Ridge ArchiMer
Petit, Tillys; Mercier, Herle; Thierry, Virginie.
The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature located south of Iceland in the North‐Atlantic Ocean that strongly influences the subpolar gyre (SPG) circulation. Based on velocity and hydrographic measurements carried out along the crest of the Reykjanes Ridge from the Icelandic continental shelf to 50°N during the RREX cruise in June – July 2015, we derived the first direct estimates of volume and water mass transports over the Reykjanes Ridge. North of 53.15°N, circulation was mainly westward; south of this latitude it was mainly eastward. The westward transport was estimated at 21.9 ± 2.5 Sv (Sv = 106 m3 s‐1) and represents the SPG intensity. The westward flows followed two main pathways at 57°N near the Bight Fracture Zone and at 59 – 62°N. We...

Influence of Water Masses on the Biodiversity and Biogeography of Deep-Sea Benthic Ecosystems in the North Atlantic ArchiMer
Puerta, Patricia; Johnson, Clare; Carreiro-silva, Marina; Henry, Lea-anne; Kenchington, Ellen; Morato, Telmo; Kazanidis, Georgios; Luis Rueda, Jose; Urra, Javier; Ross, Steve; Wei, Chih-lin; Manuel Gonzalez-irusta, Jose; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Orejas, Covadonga.
Circulation patterns in the North Atlantic Ocean have changed and re-organized multiple times over millions of years, influencing the biodiversity, distribution, and connectivity patterns of deep-sea species and ecosystems. In this study, we review the effects of the water mass properties (temperature, salinity, food supply, carbonate chemistry, and oxygen) on deep-sea benthic megafauna (from species to community level) and discussed in future scenarios of climate change. We focus on the key oceanic controls on deep-sea megafauna biodiversity and biogeography patterns. We place particular attention on cold-water corals and sponges, as these are ecosystem-engineering organisms that constitute vulnerable marine ecosystems (VME) with high associated...

Interannual variability of upper ocean water masses as inferred from Argo Array ArchiMer
Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Llovel, William; Portela, Esther.
nterannual variability of Ocean Heat Content (OHC) is intimately linked to ocean water mass changes. Water mass characteristics are imprinted at the ocean surface and are modulated by climate variability on interannual to decadal time scales. In this study, we investigate the water mass change and their variability using an isopycnal decomposition of the OHC. For that purpose, we address the thickness and temperature changes of these water masses using both individual temperature‐salinity profiles and optimal interpolated products from Argo data. Isopycnal decomposition allows us to characterize the water masses interannual variability and decadal trends of volume and OHC. During the last decade (2006–2015), much of interannual and decadal warming is...
